Movie Blog: Hunger Games Catching Fire

Catching Fire is the second book/movie in the series The Hunger Games. The series contains 3 books and soon to be 3 movies. They are as follows (in order) The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mocking Jay. The name "Hunger Games" come from the main idea of the book. The Hunger Games are an annual ritual that force young children from the age 12 and up, to place themselves into a gigantic raffle to join the Hunger Games. The day the contestants are chosen are know more commonly as the "reaping day".  There are 12 districts and from each district 2 competitors are chosen (1 boy and 1 girl). They all are placed into a dome and fight each other to death, and the last person standing wins. The Captiol are the hosts of these annual games. They provide a place to stay, a training area, and food for the competitors. If you are chosen to go to the Hunger Games, then there is no going back, unless someone else is willing to go for you... which no one would do.

Main ideas: Catching Fire is the second movie in the series. It focuses on the victors of the previous Hunger Games leading up to this 3rd quarter quell. To celebrate this 75th annual hunger games the Capitol decide to do something different and special. They select victors of the previous Hunger Games as the contestants or tributes. In the previous movie, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark win the 74th Hunger Games for district 12. Katniss has became a symbol to all people because of her courage when she took the place for her sister on Reaping day. There are 3 victors in district 12, 2 boys and 1 girl. Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, and Haymitch Abernathy. The two victors chosen to go to the Hunger Games, like last time are Katniss and Peeta.

Summary: Katniss and Peeta are chosen to go to the Hunger Games once more.  They try to get as many allies they can at the training area, and they do but what they don't know is that they have more allies then they think. All of the contestants absolutely despise that the Capitol choose victors to compete again. Most people see Katniss as a symbol of peace because of her love and caring towards Peeta and other contestants that are younger than her. President Snow (the President of the Captiol) thinks that she will start a revolution to stop these games. Since everyone despises the games, the contestants ally with Katniss to keep her safe. Their main goal was to keep her safe from the traps in the dome, and they succeed.  Katniss escapes the dome by firing an arrow that has been wrapped in wire, and with perfect timing lightning strikes a tree in the dome every 12 hours she synchronizes the lightning and shoots the arrow in the sky, breaking the dome.

Characters: The main character is Katniss and she is accompanied by Peeta. The movie is from a 3rd person perspective, following Katniss and Peeta. There are many other characters that have importance to the movie such as Haymitch, Gale, Primrose, Finnick, Johanna, Mags, and President Snow. They all helped out Katniss some how wither they assisted her in the Games or outside of the Games.

Best Part: I think the best part was when Katniss shot the "lightning arrow" towards the forcefield. When I saw this scene I knew it was going to happen, but didn't know what the outcome would be. You don't see that kind of outcome very often. Katniss gets carried off in a ship/helecopter/aeroplane (not really sure what it was) leaving all her allies and friends in the dome to get sent to the Capitol.

Worst Part: The saddest part (there was no worst part) was when Mags went willing into the poison fog, so that Finnick, Katniss, and Peeta can live on. This made me sad because she was very old and Finnick (her district partner) had to take care of her. She also volunteered for another contestant that was chosen, because the person that was chosen went crazy after she won the Hunger Games. The one thing I didn't like was the violence. The Capitol choose children to die in a dome for the amusement of adults! Peacekeepers harm people for doing something wrong. Like in the movie Gale saves an elderly citizen of district 12 and gets whipped for about an hour in front of most people in the district, but gets saved by Haymitch, Peeta, and Katniss. Some people seem to think this is "ok" like President Snow.

Opinion: I really enjoyed this movie although it was violent and sad. One thing I don't understand is that people seem to enjoy this movie, when it should be taken seriously.

Rating: I would rate this a 8.5/10. The story line is good but I didn't enjoy the violence, but this is a personal opinion and wouldn't apply to all people, which is why I rated it a 8.5/10

  1. It was a decent movie for sure. I much preferred it to the first one, both book and movie.
For some reason, your pictures didn't show up. You could also have embedded some videos to show me some parts from this movie, or at least the trailer.
