What can I (Mr.Samec) do to make science more valuable to you?

Nothing in science is true until it has been experimented many many times and worked out the way it should each time. This is why I think to make science more interesting you would need to make science based off theory, facts, and based off prior knowledge or as I like to refer it as past, present, future.

Science is all off of theory in my opinion. Nothing in science is is true until it has been proven many times and is accepted as fact. Some examples of proven science fact are Newtons law of gravity, The particle theory of matter, and Newtons law of Physics. Proving something in science is not a just a few experiments with you and your friends, your theory will only be accepted as fact when the whole world knows about your theory and it has been experimented many times throughout the globe. Accepted facts are known as Scientific Theories. As you might know I enjoy theory a lot. As my last blog post was based on averages and theory. It is a theory because it hasn't been proven yet or it hasn't been experimented.

Facts are another component to science. Using the facts we already know, we can come up with new theories creating more opportunities at discovering something new. Facts can help us with learning the truth and future technology or inventions.  Future inventions will make our lives easier therefore causing that first theory to become the next television or the next "eco-friendly-super-fast-car". But theories don't only apply for technology, they can apply for medical uses (the cure for cancer).

Prior knowledge is how we get our "theory topic" I guess you could say. To find the "theory topic" you would need prior knowledge as to what we need in our lives to make them easier, to find a cure for a disease,  With our theory topic we can discus the details and how we could make the theory true or make it slightly more viable.

This is why I think you can make science more valuable and more interesting by making science more theoretical and based off the true facts we already have.

Are there other intelligent life forms in the universe?

How much of the universe have we seen(using technology or telescopes)?  Astronomers have seen 13 billion light years away from earth containing billions upon billions of galaxies. We are in one of the galaxies known as the Milky Way. The Milky Way is approximately 100,000 light years in diameter and 1,000 light years thick. Let me put this in to the metric system. A light year is exactly equal to 10,000,000,000,000 kilometers!! That number right there is 10 trillion kilometers. Now multiply that by 13,000,000,000. Just you basic multiplication.
What is 10,000,000,000,000 x 13,000,000,000 = 130,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 km!  I don't even know what
number that it is or how accurate it is. This number is just what we have seen so far! Imagine how much more to the
universe there is. This is why I choose to believe there are other intelligent life forms in the entire universe.

Life forms can only live on planets. Assuming that each galaxy has the same amount of inhabitable planets
as the Milky Way I can make a guess that in each of those billions upon billions of galaxies there are about 54
inhabitable planets. In at least one of those planets there has to be at least one other intelligent life form.  Also those
54 inhabitable planets need to have a perfect solar system like ours to live. That cuts the amount of inhabitable
planets to about 36 maybe but still there are billions upon billions of solar systems.

Another reason there could be other intelligent life forms is that every life form need some source of food.
Whether they get it by hunting or they make their own food they need some source of food.  This brings me to my next topic, food chains/webs. Food chains/webs just show how each living organism gets its food. If there is one animal on a planet how would it get its food (other than cannibalism)?  With every species on a planet there has to be at least 2 other species. One above on the food chain and one below (until the species on the top or bottom can't be eaten/makes its own food). This means that on each of the 36 planet there could be at least 3 new species.

This proves my point that there has to be at least one other intelligent life forms in the universe.

Social Media

Is social media helpful to our society?

Social media has its helpful at times but when people dedicate most of their time to social media, that's when things get out of hand. Social media has it's pros and cons. They are not completely balanced but are fairly even.

Pros: To start off I will say that I am a firm supporter of social media. It has saved me a few times if I have forgotten something at school I can ask one of my friends through social media to get the information I need.
I don't do this every often but if I ever forget I can rely on social media. This doesn't mean that I constantly ask my friends for things but I know that I have "insurance". Another time I used social media was to do school projects (like science labs). I would ask my partner(s) to get Skype so that we could work together on the project. I never get social media like Facebook because I think that Facebook is only for sharing what you would do on a daily basis. If I ever get Facebook it would only be because everyone that is in my group for a project has it and they don`t have Skype.

Cons: I didn't mention this in the pros section but the main reason I don't have Facebook is because of the creepy stalker people. ANYONE on earth can search up your name and find out stuff about you. I remember we had presentations on Facebook and how there were settings that could keep yourself  hidden but I also remember reading on the news that they took theses settings out. I am not sure if they implemented this yet but I am not taking the chance. Also I think that social media is the main cause of hackers. I have never been hacked because I am mostly careful of who I talk to and what I say to them. Lots of people have been hacked due to their inappropriate language or attitude toward something. Also social media causes problems like cyber-bullying. This is another reason I don't have Facebook but have Skype. On Skype you talk to each other so that I can at least get some kind of idea as to who I was talking to me. I am not hating of Facebook I am using Facebook as an example.

Conclusion: Like I said, I am a firm supporter in social media. It has saved me many times if I forgot things at school but I try not to forget because if I get lazy and always ask my friends for things, in the future they won't give me the information that I need.

If I could meet anyone in history

If I could meet anyone in history I would meet Sir. John A MacDonald.  I would choose him because he is an important Canadian figure, he was one of the 13 fathers of confederation (the joining of all provinces to form The Dominion of Canada), what did do during with their spare time in the 1800's and I would like to learn about what people did for entertainment.

Background details/accomplishments.
Sir John A MacDonald was born on January 11, 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland. He was a politician back in the mid 1800`s. Like any other politician he had a rival. George Brown. They both disagreed with each other... but when it came to confederation they both agreed to work together and form the Dominion of Canada. He was one of the 13 fathers of confederation. He was also the first prime minister of Canada and served 19 years of being prime minister after that.

Sir John A MacDonald is an amazing person. He accomplished what most people couldn't. He went beyond everyone's expectations. He (along with the other 12 fathers of confederation) were convinced that joining together would make a difference in people's daily lives. He is an important Canadian authority figure because many people look up to him without a doubt that hopefully one day another person like him will be brought upon us to lead our country. He saw equality in the French and the English. He once said "Let us be English or let us be French . . . and above all let us be Canadians." -John A MacDonald.  Because of all of his actions he has been rewarded with the gift of being on the $10 Canadian bill. This is why I chose Sir John A MacDonald.

John A MacDonald probably was thinking of more than one thing at a time. If I had the chance to meet him I would talk to him about some of those things. So if he thought ahead or made stuff up as he went to meetings, conferences, ... etc.  What was going on in his mind during a conference or a public election. How he felt to be Canada's first prime minister. I would also want to know what people did for entertainment. Like what was the "cool" thing to do back then?  This ties in with what did people spend their spare time on? The last thing I would ask him is if there were any sports back then (competitively).

If I had the chance to meet Sir John A MacDonald I would make the most of it by asking him all sorts of questions but to top it off... the million dollar question. I would ask him why was George Brown your "rival"? To me it doesn't make sense because together they created the blueprints of Canada and alone they didn't "cover much ground".

These are the things I would ask Sir John A MacDonald if I had the chance to meet him.

Harrison Bergeron

My opinion on the Harrison Bergeron movie/story.

Summary: It was the year 2081 and everyone was finally equal. Most people were handicapped by the Handicapper-General Diana Moon Glampers but some weren't like Hazel Bergeron. Hazel had a perfectly average beauty, strength, speed, eyesight, and beauty. If you were "above average" then you must wear a government approved handicap at all times. Harrison Bergeron was the son of Hazel and George Bergeron. When Harrison was 14 years old he was taken by the H-G men.  He was sent to jail because he was completely different from everyone else. He is 7 ft tall, wears all the possible handicaps that are specially made to make him as average as possible, needs to wear a red rubber nose, a disgusting mask, has to keep his eyebrows shaved at all times, and wears "special" sunglasses that are supposed to make him half blind. He was also"plotting" to take over the government.  He escapes jail with all his handicaps that are supposed to make a him half blind.  He breaks into a live dancing stadium. He takes off all his handicaps on live television. If taking out one lead ball= $2,000 and 2 years in jail... the H-G had no choice but to kill Harrison and they do. On live T.V.  Sadly enough Hazel and George were watching but they forget because Hazel is "average" and George's thoughts were interrupted by his earpiece that sent a sharp noise into his brain so he it allow him to take advantage of his intelligence

Similarities: In the story and the movie the plot of the story were very similar.  The most important similarity was the ending. In both the story and the movie the ending gave out the same moral. The moral of the story is that individuality is not something to be discouraged about.  Being different is a good thing because you can express yourself. You can stand up for your rights and beliefs.
"There are people who live their whole lives on the default settings, never realizing you can customize."
-By: Robert Brault
Also the ending was very sad and in a way made me feel that everyone was stupid or "average". I felt this way because Hazel and George watched their son die on live television and they just forgot about it in like a minute.

Differences: There weren't many differences. In my opinion the main 2 difference was that in the movie he was a terrorist and he was plotting to take over the government.  This drastically changed the aroma of Harrison. In the story it says that Harrison was only 14 when he was taken away and reappears on the stage still young but in the movie it tells us that he was in the prison for 6 years (possibly thinking of how to over throw the government.) Also in the movie Harrison had a "bomb" hidden under the stadium but the story didn't. The bomb was actually just a transmitter because he knew that the government would cut the transmitting. The second difference is that in the story it doesn't tell us anything about how George watched a interview with the H-G pretending to wear handicaps. This is a key point to the movie because since the T.V.show was still on air it shows all the viewers that the H-G doesn't actually wear any handicaps.

Preference: In my opinion I think I enjoyed the movie more than the story because in the movie the story line flowed better. The book didn't really explain what Diana Moon Glampers looked like. This can tell us a lot because if we can at least picture, her with or without handicaps on then that could tell us if she is actually bringing equality to everyone.  Also in the movie the plot makes more sense. It makes Harrison look extremely smart. Harrison knew that they will deactivate the first transmitter so he hid another transmitter in the corner of the room and left the other one in the middle. Even if he was a terrorist he used that to everyone's advantage. By this I mean that by doing what he did he made everyone realize that equality was stupid. Even though most people forgot (like George and Hazel) he thought that there was someone like him out there in the world somewhere. I think this is why he went to the live T.V. show. I would rate the movie a 9/10 and the short story a 7.5/10.

Favorite Memory: My favorite part of the story was when Hazel said and repeated "Gee I could tell that one was doozy."  This was my favorite part because it shows how dumb society gets if everyone had the same intelligence but, out there in the world someone would be as intelligent, handsome, athletic, and strong. That one person could over come the government as Harrison wanted to do. I think that Harrison completed that first step to conquering "equality" and over coming the government.

Should teenagers have credit cards?

Many teen's think they need credit cards to live. Others think credit cards are not necessary to have but could be helpful. This blog is my opinion to prove that credit cards are not necessary but having one could be helpful. Teens shouldn't have a credit card for three reasons.

The first reason is why should teens have a credit card?  At school you don't need a credit card, if you want something in a store which won't happen very often why cant you just pay in cash?  Also if you can use a credit card in your school cafeteria what would happen if your card gets stolen?  Another reason, in my personal experience when I want something at school like an ice cream after a hot summer afternoon if I wouldn't pay by using a credit card, I would use cash.

The second reason is if you don't get a credit card when you are a teen then when you are an adult you will be more logical about your spending habits. I think this because I personally am a saver rather than spending, but if you get a credit card when you were a teen and was a spender then those spending habits might be an issue when you are an adult.  Also if you don't have a credit card when you are a teen but you were a spender in general, (video game money or wanting to buy many things at once) maybe when you are an adult you will realize that spending all at once ins't a good idea, and will start to save while making investments.

The last reason and the most important reason that you shouldn't have a credit card when you are a teen is because of debt. If I were a parent (which i'm not) I probably wouldn't want to get my child into debt because he (for the sake of argument) would only be 14 and when he gets into his twenties he would owe visa or some other major credit card company 50,000 dollars.  This may seem dumb but the world may be cruel to you.   The world is full of people that will do anything to get lots of money people that run credit card companies are one of them.

Credit cards can teach you many lessons good or bad but in the end we learn that your mistakes could effect others.

If I could live anywhere in the world

If I could live anywhere in the world I would live in Los Angeles.  Los Angeles would be the perfect place for me to live because it has everything I would want in a city to live there.  Los Angeles has great weather, it has beaches, and it has lots of activities to do during the day or night.

Los Angeles's weather is very hot in the summer but if you get solar panels on your roof then you can power your entire house over the summer!  This means that there will be no electricity bills over the summer.  You and your friends can use any electrical device in your house without the worry of paying the electrical bill.    In the winter it is very warm for a winter at 10 degrees Celsius to 23 degrees Celsius.  This means that there wont be any snow.   Having no snow means that you don't need to shovel your driveway, no snow gear (snow pants, snowshoes, gloves, etc) and you won't need to use energy to warm your house or car.

Los Angeles's beaches are vast because L.A. is on the west coast of the United States. Since Los Angeles is on the Pacific Rim the beaches are on the Pacific Ocean.  The Pacific Ocean is the biggest ocean by far. It is 155,557,000 Square Kilometers.  Also if you buy a beach house, wouldn't you like to wake you and see the ocean from your house?  Wouldn't you want to watch the sunset over the ocean everyday?  Well in L.A. all that could happen.  Lastly you wouldn't have to worry about how cold the ocean would be because the entire season it will be 10 degrees Celsius at least.

Finally L.A.'s activities. L.A. has many great places to visit in the night or day. During the day you could go golf. Then go to one of L.A.'s many national parks. Next you would go to a zoo or aquarium. During the night you could go to the dock and ride a cruise while eating dinner. After a long day of activities you come back home, go to the beach and watch the sunset in the distance.  Now remember that this was only one day.  Think of the endless possibilities that you could do in L.A.

In conclusion L.A. would be the perfect retirement country for me. It has nice weather, a place to cool off (the beach) and lots of activities.

 Do-over generation

My opinion on the Do-Over generation.                                                                            August 28,2010
In this essay I will give my opinion on the Do-over generation.
Many years have gone by while students still hand in work late and don't get penalized. "The do over generation, raised to believe they can do anything but never have to do it on time." After two years the teachers, school boards, and parents had to do something about it. They created a new policy that stated that kids in grades one through twelve have made their teachers realize that they have been getting away with handing work in late for too long now.

In my opinion I think that I have to agree with the teachers, school boards and parents. Even though I would love to hand in assignments late it just wouldn't make sense. Image when you are in you thirty and you have a wife with kids. Your kids are late for school, your wife is late for work and so are you. Your boss arrives just before the store opens at 6:00 P.m.  If the do over generation stayed that way the entire earth would become late.

Handing in work late creates laziness and with this rule you wont want to be lazy. In the text it says that high school students who missed 20 per cent of class lost a credit. "For the first time, students who miss 20 per cent of class time will now lose a credit." To graduate high school you need 30 credits. If you loose a credit then you will have to spend some of your summer going to summer school to regain that credit but if you miss 20 per cent of class in more than one class you are going to spend a lot of time in summer school. Now think about that would you rather be lazy, hand in your work late and go to summer school or hand in all your work in on time, not be lazy and not go to summer school. The choice is yours.

In the text it says that last year they surveyed teachers asking them about their class and the absenteeism and late assignments. Of the 562 teachers that responded 62 per cent stated that they experienced absenteeism and 84 per cent experienced late assignments handed in. "Of the 562 who responded, 62 per cent the rule had resulted in a higher level of absenteeism and 84 per cent said they had experienced an increase in late assignments."

In conclusion I think that the teachers, school boards and parents made a good decision in penalizing students for late work and being late for class. Even though I would love to never have deadlines there is a consequence for everything.
